Shabbaton 2013

Shabbaton Experiment Surpasses All Expectations

This year's Community Shabbaton -- jointly sponsored by SCM, Hebrew College and CJP's Commission on Jewish Life & Learning -- took on a new, collaborative look with fabulous learning and the same sense of community and great davening/worship we've learned to expect from past Shabbat gatherings.

Based on the Meah learning model, our theme, "What About God," was taught by four of Meah's amazing faculty members: Dr. Marc Brettler, Dr. Rabbi Shaye Cohen, Dr. Deeana Klepper and Dr. Jacob Meskin, who explicated biblical, rabbinic, medieval and modern perspectives, respectively, on this important and provocative theme.

Read what people who attended this year's Shabbaton had to say about their experience:

“Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! It's been more than a week since the Shabbaton and I am still feeling the joy from the time we shared together. You did a fabulous job organizing the program under this new and different format. Truly, a sense of community did emerge. The people were wonderful (new friends and old), the learning was thoughtful and interesting, the food was yummy and the davening and music (really, they cannot be separated) were inspiring.

SCM Shabbatonim are always wonderful. And this one in particular came at a time when I really needed that boost, that sense of community and that inspiration. I arrived on Friday full of a stressful week (among many) and emerged on Saturday night feeling replenished, connected and inspired.

I wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgivukkah. May you and the Synagogue Council continue to grow from strength to strength.”

Dear Alan,
We are back home, the Jet Lag is almost behind us and we have time to reflect on the wonderful Shabbaton that we experienced in Jewish Boston.

We assume that you yourself felt the positive "click" between the three Rabbis. We all enjoyed the physical atmosphere, the true friendship, and the general warmth.

We are convinced that the work of SCM, the diversity — the sensitivity to service everyone and to offend no one — is quite evident. The cooperation, spiritually and venue at Hebrew College proved itself.

The special attention given to the Israeli delegation, the visits to the Vilna Shul, Mayyim Hayyim, Gann Academy and the Holocaust Memorial were very successful and appreciated.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Rabbi Rafi & Karen Weinberg
