"Jews on the Move: The Suburbanization of Boston Jewry"

SCM's annual Bus Tour of Historic Jewish Boston to take place on Sunday, October 17th from 12:30-6:00 PM

Tour begins and ends at Temple Emanuel, 385 Ward Street, Newton

Join the Synagogue Council of Massachusetts and Temple Emanuel of Newton, in celebration of its 75th anniversary, for a bus tour of historic Jewish Boston. This year we focus on the suburbanization of Boston Jewry. We will tour and trace congregations as they move from city to suburb; as new congregations are generated in Boston's suburbs; and as the structure, behavior, and physical look of Boston Jewry changes wtih the move. We plan to visit present and former Jewish synagogues in Roxbury, Dorchester, Randolph, and Newton. We will meet at Temple Emanuel at 12:15 and leave promptly at 12:30 -- rain or shine. Advance reservations required.

"Jews on the Move" will be led by Ellen Smith, Associate Professor at Brandeis University, scholar, curator and author. Ellen is co-editor and author of "The Jews of Boston", the curator of three award-winning exhibitions on Jewish Boston, and the ever-popular tour leader of SCM's bus tours for the past five years.

Our tour, which costs $36 per person, features the following schedule (subject to change as we confirm times and locations):

  • Visit to the Columbus Avenue AME Zion Church (formerly the 1885 building of Temple Israel of Boston)
  • Drive past Morse Auditorium, Commonwealth Ave., Boston (1907 Temple Israel building) and the modern Temple Israel of Boston --view from the Riverway
  • Visit to the United House of Prayer for All People (206 Seaver Street, Dorchester; formerly Mishkan Tefilla)
  • Visit to Temple Beth Am (871 North Main Street, Randolph)
  • Visit and wrap-up program/slide show at Temple Emanuel, 385 Ward Street, Newton
