Birnbaum Lecture 2015: an Emotional and Moving Success
In addition to our featured speakers, we were privileged to hear words of tribute from Dr. Matthew Zizmor, past Preident of the Synagogue Council. Matthew shared the following heartfelt words: "Connie was blessed with binah yeterah an extra share of wisdom. She was able to offer people her wise council and sage advice. She would look at a problem and would come up with insights and solutions. Connie was a rare diamond with many facets and everyone who saw her, saw something special. She was a true unity associate. She could connect with every Jew regardless of denomination or affiliation, in her own way and making each one feel special."
Music is an important part of our tradition and has become a fixture in the annual Birnbaum Lecture programs. This year featured a musical prelude of Kol Nidre for piano and cello, followed by three pieces by the Zachor Choral Ensemble, including the premiere of Alan Nelson's new arrangement of Safam's Nachamu Ami for chorus.
Our gratitude to the many people who made this year's Birnbaum Lecture a tremendous success: our speakers Ofir Shaer and Rabbi Rick Jacobs; Jerry Silverman, CEO of the Jewish Federations of North America; the clergy, staff and lay leadership of Temple Emanuel; our sponsors, tribute committee and donors; and the numerous volunteers who helped with publicity, program and poster distribution. And, most importantly, Dr. Herbert Birnbaum and the members of the extended Birnbaum mishpacha.
