"Synagogue-of-the-Month"Our Featured Member synagogue for September 2010 is Congregation Agudath Achim of Taunton. We are pleased to recognize the synagogue in celebration of its 100th anniversary. Congregation Agudath Achim serves the Greater Taunton Jewish community including the towns of Raynham, Lakeville, Norton, Easton, Middleboro, Mansfield, Dighton, Rehoboth, Freetown, Bridgewater, and Berkley. Our 85 member families are part of a proud Jewish heritage that is 100 years old. At Congregation Agudath Achim we strive to maximize opportunities for Jews in the Greater Taunton Area to participate in Jewish communal life. Congregation Agudath Achim works to live up to God's call to "be a light to the nations." Moving into the 21st century, we embrace the centuries-old vast Jewish moral, spiritual and philosophical tradition, undergirded by the profound teachings of Torah. Our current congregational leaders continue our long tradition of providing meaningful worship services, strong religious education, community mitzvah projects and opportunities for fostering Jewish friendships and social life. Originating as an Orthodox congregation in the early 1900's, with women sitting in the balcony, transitioning to being a part of the Conservative movement, and now an unaffiliated Jewish congregation addressing the current trends in Jewish family life -- we welcome people from diverse Jewish backgrounds to participate in maintaining and building a strong Jewish presence in the center of southeastern Massachusetts. The Centennial celebrations will include the entire greater Taunton community and will raise needed funds for the Congregation. Preliminary plans include a special Sukkot Gathering, an Israeli Shuk Craft Fair, Rededication of the Synagogue, Historical Perspectives, Purim Carnival, Women's Seder, Mitzvah Week, and a Reunion Extravaganza on June 30, 2012! We invite Jewish individuals, Jewish families, Jewish interfaith families, and all seeking the timeless truths of Torah to join our Jewish community.
